Clinical Interest
The urine protein/creatinuria ratio is used to estimate the amount of protein present in the urine on a standardised basis.
It is a simpler and more practical method than measuring 24-hour proteinuria, which is often restrictive for patients. It provides a reliable estimate of the amount of protein eliminated by the kidneys about creatinine.
It is commonly used to monitor patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).
In diabetic patients, this ratio is essential for the early detection of microalbuminuria, which is one of the first signs of diabetic nephropathy. It helps to monitor disease progression and adjust treatment.
The report is also used in hypertensive patients, helping to assess the impact of hypertension on renal function.
Reference values:
- Normal: < 0.2 mg/mg (or < 200 mg/g)
- Microalbuminuria: 30-300 mg/g
- Clinical proteinuria: > 0.3 mg/mg (or > 300 mg/g)
Advantages:
- Practical: A simple urine sample.
- Reliable: Corrects for urine dilution or concentration.
- Fast: Results are obtained quickly, without 24-hour urine collection.
