Clinical Interest

The irregular agglutinin test (IAT), or indirect Coombs test, is a biological examination carried out to detect antibodies present in the blood plasma of patients who have been exposed to foreign red blood cells as part of a blood transfusion (erythrocyte incompatibility) or during pregnancy (foetomaternal alloimmunisation).

This test ensures that the patient does not have any antibodies that could react with the blood products transfused or the red blood cells of the foetus in a pregnant woman.
These anti-erythrocyte alloantibodies (IgG), which are active at 37°C, can cause foetal or neonatal haemolytic disease and provoke a haemolytic reaction in the event of an incompatible transfusion.
