Clinical Interest
Low CSF glucose levels (hypoglycorrhachia) are frequently observed in bacterial, fungal and tuberculosis infections. Infectious agents consume glucose and immune cells increase their metabolism. A CSF/glycaemia ratio of less than 0.4 is highly suggestive of bacterial or fungal meningitis.
In viral infections, CSF glucose levels tend to remain normal, distinguishing viral from bacterial infections. Occasionally, slight reductions in glucose may occur, but not to the same extent as in bacterial infections.
